What to Bring to the Counter So Your Part Gets Ordered Once
A few minutes of prep before you call or come in can turn three trips into one.

Nothing wastes more time than driving out for a part, getting home, and finding out it's not quite right. Most of that is avoidable with a little prep before you call or come in. Here's what actually helps us get your order right the first time.
Start with your VIN
Your vehicle identification number is the single most useful thing you can bring to the counter. It tells us the exact build of your vehicle, engine size included, which matters more than you'd think once you get past the basic year, make and model. If you don't know it off the top of your head, it's on your registration, your insurance card, or stamped on the dashboard on the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
Know the trim and options, not just the model name
The same model can ship with more than one engine, more than one transmission, and different option packages that change what fits underneath the body. If you know your trim level, or whether your vehicle has a feature like a sunroof, a tow package or a particular wheel size, mention it. Small details like that can be the difference between a part that fits and one that doesn't.
Bring the old part, or at least a clear photo of it
If you're replacing something that failed, the physical part or a clear photo of it tells us more in five seconds than a description usually can. Photograph it from a couple of angles, including any part numbers or markings stamped or printed on it. If you can bring the actual part along, even better, we can compare it directly against what's on the shelf rather than guessing from a description over the phone.
If you're not sure, describe the symptom, not just the part name
You don't need to know the exact part name to get help. Tell us what's actually happening, a grinding noise on turns, a dashboard light, a slow leak, a rough shift, and let us help narrow it down from there. Guessing at a part name that turns out to be wrong just adds a step, and there's no shame in describing a problem in plain terms and letting the counter translate it into the right part.
A few things worth having ready
- Your VIN, from your registration, insurance card, or the dashboard plate
- Trim level and any notable options or features
- The old part itself, or clear photos with any visible part numbers
- A plain description of the symptom if you're not certain what part you need
- Which route you want: a used part, a remanufactured one, or just an estimate to start with
New parts vs remanufactured, know which one you're actually asking for
We carry both used and remanufactured engines and transmissions, and the two aren't the same thing. A used part came out of a real donor vehicle as is. A remanufactured one has been rebuilt to OEM-quality standards. If you already know which route fits your budget and your timeline, say so up front, it narrows the conversation and gets you a straighter answer faster.
Selling a vehicle brings its own version of this same prep
If you're calling about selling a vehicle rather than buying a part, the same instinct applies. Have your VIN, your title if you can find it, and an honest description of the vehicle's condition ready before you call. We buy most types of vehicles, including ones only good for scrap, and next-day pickup is available once a sale is agreed, so a little prep on your end speeds up your end of it too.
Call ahead, especially on a Saturday
We're open Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and every other Saturday from 9 to noon, so call first if you're planning a Saturday visit to make sure we're open that week. We're bilingual at the counter, English and Spanish, and if what you need isn't on hand, our part-locating service can often track it down. We also offer free estimates within one to two days if you'd rather have a number before you decide anything, and next-day delivery or same-day service if timing matters more than anything else. A little preparation before you call means less time waiting and a better chance we get it right on the first trip.
