Engine yard

Used Engines

Gasoline, diesel and hybrid engines for cars, trucks and SUVs, domestic and import, tested before sale with the long-block warranty explained before you pay.

Chapter 01

Gasoline, diesel and hybrid, cars, trucks and SUVs

The yard stocks used engines across gasoline, diesel and hybrid drivetrains, for cars, trucks and SUVs, domestic and import. That range is why the part-locating service matters here more than almost anywhere else in the yard: an engine is a bigger commitment than a headlight, so if the exact one is not already pulled and tested, it is worth a call to see what the network can turn up.

A free estimate within one to two days is the same process whether you are asking about a sedan's four-cylinder or a work truck's diesel. Bring the VIN or the engine code and the counter can narrow it down fast.

What 'long block' means for your warranty

Every used engine sold here is tested before it leaves the yard, and it carries a warranty, but the warranty is narrower than a lot of buyers assume, and it is better to know that before you pay than to find out after. Cover is strictly limited to replacement of a defective long block: the block, crank, pistons, connecting rods, and the complete heads and assembly.

It does not cover intake or exhaust manifolds, gaskets, oil pans, distributors, alternators, A/C compressors, power steering pumps, fuel pumps, carburetors, fuel injection systems, spark plugs, filters or water pumps. Those are all bolt-on components that come across from the old engine or get sourced separately, and none of them are part of what the warranty replaces.

Chapter 03

Fitting is part of the warranty, not an afterthought

The engine has to be installed by a certified mechanic for the warranty to be effective. That is a condition of the cover itself, not a suggestion, and it needs saying before the sale rather than discovered after a claim gets turned down.

If your own mechanic is doing the install, that is fine, the requirement is simply that they are certified. If you are not sure who is doing the work yet, ask at the counter, Patterson Road sees this question a lot and would rather answer it now than after the engine is already in the bay.

Cores, and getting the return right

If a core is part of the deal, it has to come back within 90 days, drained of fluids, with the invoice. No invoice means no refund on the core, and the same 90-day clock applies with no exceptions after it closes.

Keep the invoice from the day of purchase somewhere you will actually find it again. It is the single piece of paper every part of this warranty, the engine cover and the core return alike, runs through, and it is what the counter will ask for first if anything needs sorting out.

Read the full warranty first

The long-block cover above is a summary. The complete terms, including returns, restocking and the core policy, are on our warranties page. If it turns out a rebuild suits the vehicle better than a used engine, our remanufactured engines page covers that option too.
